Driving in Greece
Greek roads vary enormously from three lane motorways to treacherous single-track gravel roads. As there are many mountains many of the road shave to wind their way around cliffs and hills. Therefore it can take quite a long time to travel in the country and can be hair-raising.
Although the condition of the roads is fine a word of caution is required about the general standard of driving in Greece. Greece has a very high accident rate compared to other European countries and is most prevalent on main roads between cities. The varied speed between cars, lorries and mopeds means that overtaking manoeuvres can be scary in Greece. Expect the unexpected particularly if turning across the traffic.
A European Union driver's license, or an USA driver's license is valid in Greece. Road signs contain no text and are easy to understand, as the signs are familiar European style. Wearing a seat belt is mandatory.
