A Road Trip from Marrakech - Ouarzazate
The larger and safer road is via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass. It runs through the full range of Atlas environments, from the Haouz plains, through the verdant foothills of the Oued Zat, to the barren peaks of the Atlas and the arid regions around Ouarzazate. The journey is 200km and should be taken slowly perhaps stopping at Upper Taddert for tagine, biscuits and tea. Then another stop at the Tizi-n-Tichka pass itself which is just about half way. Shortly after the pass is a turning to the left leading to Kasbah Telouet which is one of the most spectacular kasbahs of the Atlas in its eagle nest of a position. Back to the main road which sweeps and winds down to Ouarzazate with its backdrop of austere mountains, wide open spaces, valleys of palm trees and small irrigated fields. The area is of more interest than the town itself, it is a base for exploration into the Sahara region. 20 miles from Ouarzazate is the ancient oasis town of Skoura with its fine examples of the mud castles of southern Morocco. Most are in a state of ruin but one, Kasbah Ben Moro has been restored to its former glory by a Spanish enthusiast and is now a hotel where you can eat and sleep in a 400 year old mud castle!
There are various trips to do off the main road but they require a 4x4 vehicle as the roads are unsurfaced.
