London is the capital city of England and one the world's most famous city. It is a large multi-cultural city with famous landmarks, culture, arts, shops, parks and many other attractions. If you hire a car in London a small car will probably suffice but be wary of a congestion charge in central London.
London is surrounded by a motorway that circles the city. This makes access to other parts of the UK very easy on a comprehensive motorway system.
To the south of London you can take your hire car to Brighton, a regency town that sits in style next to the sea. Further along the coast to the west you will find Southampton and the Isle of Wight, a centre for yachting. A convertible hire car would look great here! Keep heading west towards Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. As well as rolling hills, clifftop walks and seafood you will see such towns as Plymouth, Exeter and Torquay.
To the West of London the M4 motorway takes you past Windsor and its castle, through the
Cotswolds and on to Bristol. From here you cross the Severn into Wales. Cardiff is not far
from the bridge and is the gateway to some beautiful landscapes before you reach Pembroke.
From here there is a ferry service to Ireland. Further up into Wales you will come across
rolling hills before Snowdonia National Park. A 4x4 hire car would be welcome if you tour
further afield here.
Back to London! The main north south motorway is the M1. It heads towards Birmingham via
Stratford upon Avon, the home of Shakespeare. Take the M6 for Manchester, Chester, Liverpool
and the beautiful Lake District. The M1 carries on up to Leeds and the starting point for the
Yorkshire Dales and close to the beautiful ancient city of York. Newcastle is the most
northerly city.
Scotland is best approached from the M6 and the Lake District. If you are travelling to
Scotland from the south then you may well require a larger hire car to take your entire
luggage and give you space. Glasgow is about 100 miles from the border with England.
Edinburgh is 50 miles to the East of Glasgow. Stirling, Perth and Dundee are all fairly
close and linked by motorways. The rugged West Coast of Scotland including the Isle of
Skye are approached from Glasgow. Aberdeen and the beautiful Deeside and Speyside are
found to the north of Dundee. The A9 is the main road north to Inverness, passing through
Aviemore. Inverness is the main city serving the Highlands.
The East of England is flatter topography but still beautiful and a centre for inland water
cruises. Norwich and Ipswich are the main centres.
If you are not arriving at a London airport you can hire a car from all the other regional
airports. There are lots of domestic flights as well, so if you are visiting Scotland you can
fly from London to Inverness and hire a car at Inverness airport.
